How to Add Overhead Garage Storage to Free Up Floor Space

I was surprised to discover that the most wasted space in your two car garage is above your cars – at the ceiling of your garage. The worst place to put overhead storage in a garage is above where you park your cars – until you install it poorly and the stored objects fall and crash down onto the hood and front of your cars. Overhead storage racks that are installed correctly are extremely strong and will hold lots of weight, whereas poorly installed overhead storage can be very dangerous. To create overhead storage for your garage, you need to attach the storage to the true structural elements of your garage, and then be sure to follow the recommended weight and height restrictions for the particular overhead storage system you choose.

Step-by-step: Installing Overhead Storage

  1. Find and assess your joists. Overhead racks must lag into ceiling joists, never drywall alone. Locate them with a stud finder (typically 16″ or 24″ on center). Manufacturers generally want joists at least 2×6, spaced 24″ or less, with lag screws biting at least 2″ into solid wood.
  2. Proper weight distribution. The bearing capacity of residential ceiling mounted bike racks installed into solid joists is between 250 and 600 pounds. Always note the specific weight limit of your ceiling mounted bike rack and do not exceed it. In cases where more weight capacity is needed, the joists can be reinforced.
  3. Mind door and vehicle clearance. Leave at least ~12″ above the vehicle. Measure the highest point of the garage door’s opening arc, then add a couple inches so the door never contacts the rack or its contents.
  4. Choose the right storage system. Storage for bins and totes on fixed overhead racks. Storage for bikes, kayaks and single heavy items that you regularly raise and lower with a motorized hoist. Storage for ladders and long, light weight items on ceiling hooks.
  5. Install, level and load intelligently by: a) Identifying joists where to attach the brackets / tracks with the most suitable fasteners, b) Installing the different shelves and filling them up in a straight position, c) Filling up the different shelves optimally (Heaviest objects in the middle of the shelves, lightest objects on the edge of the shelves) and d) Grouping products that require the same conditions on the shelves.

Safety tips: never mount to drywall alone, don’t overload one side or corner, put only rarely-needed items up high, and re-check the bolts periodically.

  • Store what you rarely need overhead — holiday decor, camping gear, seasonal tires — not the daily tools you’ll want within reach.
  • Center the heavy bins; edge- and corner-loading is how racks fail.
  • Measure the door’s open arc, not just ceiling height — the arc is the real clearance limit, and it’s lower than people expect.

Common Problems & Fixes

  • Rack sags or pulls away → mounted to drywall or undersized joists. Remount into solid joists or reinforce them.
  • Door hits the bins → not enough arc clearance. Raise the rack or lower the load height.
  • Rack feels unstable → uneven loading. Redistribute toward the center and re-torque the bolts.
  • Need more capacity → reinforce joists or add a second rack rather than overloading one.
