The single most dangerous mistake in vehicle recovery is grabbing the wrong strap — and the two look almost identical in the box. A tow strap and a kinetic recovery strap do opposite jobs: one must not stretch, the other must. Use a stiff tow strap for a kinetic “snatch” and it can shock-load a recovery point until metal flies; use a stretchy recovery strap for flat towing and it surges unpredictably. - Know the difference.
- Tow strap — low-stretch (polyester). For dragging a rolling vehicle at a steady load: flat towing, moving a vehicle across a lot. Often has hooks.
- Kinetic recovery strap/rope — high-stretch (nylon, ~30% stretch). For freeing a stuck vehicle by storing and releasing energy — the “snatch.” Loop ends, no hooks.
- Match the rating to the vehicle. Choose a kinetic strap/rope with a minimum breaking strength around 3–5× your vehicle’s weight. Too strong and it won’t stretch enough to work (a dead pull); too weak and it snaps.
- Ditch the metal hooks. Hooks and screw-pin steel shackles become projectiles if anything fails. Use soft shackles at the connection points — a failed soft shackle doesn’t fly like a chunk of steel.
- Attach to rated recovery points only. Never a tow ball, bumper, or hitch pin — a tow ball can shear off and launch. Pull straight in line, never at a side angle.
- Inspect and retire. Check for cuts, fraying, stiffness, and UV damage before every use; a worn strap fails at a fraction of its rating. Store it dry.
Safety tips: never connect two straps with a metal shackle, always lay a damper over the loaded line, and keep bystanders 1.5×+ the strap length away, off to the sides.

- Memory rule: tow = tight (no stretch), recovery = rubber band (stretch). If you’re going to “snatch” a stuck rig, you need the stretchy one.
- Own both — they aren’t interchangeable, and using the wrong one is exactly where gear (and people) get hurt.
